Remedial vs Relaxation Massage: What's the Difference (and Which One Do You Need)?

If you've ever booked a massage and found yourself staring at a menu with terms like "remedial" and "relaxation," you're not alone. Both are incredibly effective — but they're designed to do quite different things, and picking the right one makes a big difference to how you feel afterwards.

Here's a simple guide to help you choose.

Relaxation Massage: For Stress, Tension and Switching Off

Relaxation massage is exactly what it sounds like — a treatment focused on calming the nervous system, easing everyday muscle tension, and giving your body (and mind) a genuine break.

It typically uses slower, flowing strokes at a lighter to medium pressure. You won't be asked "does this hurt?" — the goal isn't to dig into problem areas, it's to help you unwind.

Relaxation massage is a great fit if you:

  • Feel generally tense or "wound up" from work or daily life

  • Want to switch off and de-stress

  • Are new to massage and want a gentler introduction

  • Simply want an hour to yourself

Remedial Massage: For Pain, Injury and Specific Issues

Remedial massage is a targeted, therapeutic treatment. It's used to assess and treat specific muscles, joints, or areas of the body that are causing pain, restriction, or dysfunction — think tight shoulders from desk work, lower back pain, sporting injuries, or chronic tension that just won't shift.

Your therapist will usually ask about the issue beforehand, then use techniques like deep tissue work, trigger point therapy, and stretching to address the root cause — not just the symptoms. It can feel firmer than a relaxation massage, and it's common to feel some tenderness in the treated area, similar to how a deep stretch might feel.

Because it's treatment-focused, remedial massage is also the type of massage typically covered by private health fund rebates (we offer on-the-spot HICAPS claiming, so you can claim straight away).

Remedial massage is a great fit if you:

  • Have ongoing muscle or joint pain

  • Are recovering from an injury or overuse

  • Sit at a desk most of the day and carry tension in your neck, shoulders or lower back

  • Want to use your health fund extras

Can't Decide? You Don't Have to.

Honestly, a lot of people benefit from a bit of both — and that's completely normal. If you're not sure which one you need, just let us know what's going on when you book, or mention it to your therapist at the start of your session. They'll tailor the pressure and technique to suit you either way.
